Britain has boosted its ambition to become the leading performer of small commercial satellite launches in Europe by 2030.

The UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the UK Ministry of Defense and the UK Space Agency have launched the National Space Strategy (NSS), which presents the government’s vision for the country’s future in the areas of innovation and space research.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the ability to operate in space was “critical” to ensuring the success of the British military.

“The new National Space Strategy builds on our commitment to spend more than £6 billion over the next 10 years to strengthen our space capabilities, supporting critical skills and capabilities while strengthening the UK’s security at home and abroad,” I have announced Head of the British military department in a note.

The NSS will see increased support, extended to UK aerospace companies and innovators.

Developing the UK as a superpower in science and technology is another goal set by the government. Science and Innovation Minister George Freeman said that by integrating commercial and military space activities, the UK would establish itself as “one of the world’s most attractive and innovative space economies”.

The government also plans to increase the nation’s resilience to adverse weather risks through the National Space Weather Preparedness Strategy.

Adverse weather conditions in space can disrupt the performance of technology on Earth, including power grids and satellite navigation systems.

The UK’s space economy is expected to grow from around £270 billion in 2019 to £490 billion by 2030.

The NSS is also prioritizing the development of planets across the country, from Cornwall to the Shetland Islands, to take advantage of the UK’s competitive strength in manufacturing small satellites. The strategy has been welcomed by stakeholders such as Rolls-Royce Defense, Aerospace and Defense, Security & Space Group (ADS) and the British Space Trade Association.
