An exciting two hours with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Wait a minute. What did that scanner say?
In order to properly convey how I feel about recently playing Metroid Prime 4, a game I've been waiting 18 years for, I first need to talk a little about the other two Nintendo Switch games I tried before they were released.
There was The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom from September 2024, which Nintendo invited me to play about a month before its release. When I previewed it in a conference room in New York, the game wowed me with its new system that allowed players to collect and summon copies of a myriad of items and enemies found throughout the game world.
A few weeks later, the final, previously released version of Echoes of Wisdom delighted me and my children. But soon I realized that the collection and magic that seemed to promise a few weeks before the release ended up looking like a lost idea. There was less creativity from the players than I expected.
And there's the 2023 story of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which Nintendo invited me to play in New York a month before it came out. This game surprised me during the preview due to the complexity of its system.short.
Weeks later, when I had the tears of the Kingdom at home, I found out what Nintendo's graphics staff had hidden: The third level of graphics and is probably its most interesting place. The Government's actions were more surprising than they first appeared. My review almost doesn't know the half of it.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which I played for two hours in New York City a week ago, was mostly satisfied and I happily left to play the entire game. But I have to convince you that I can't tell if my session was more echoes or more tears.
I know Nintendo kept much of the game under wraps during the preview.I don't think I really know what Metroid Prime 4 — which comes out for Switch and Switch 2 on December 4 — is actually about.
What does Nintendo want me to play?
First, on the switch 2 running in capture mode, I played the Intro to Meroid Prime 4, the same part that I released in April and which was in public shows for the program. In this section, Ojoyun hunts Spas Aran his good children to the world where we are told in Galictic Inserve the soldiers in a research station. The high-speed training led to the emergence of a mysterious device.
Then, with a Switch 2 connected to a TV, I played for over an hour what I believe is the first full area of Prime 4, a first-person trek through a lush forest on the planet Viewros called the Fore Green.Person-is archeology/humanity/exploration games).I got some basic upgrades (missiles, morph ball bombs, etc) for Samus's exosuit.I checked my map a lot and fought a boss.Vintage prime stuff.
I was especially happy with the Green Fury part of the game.Prime 4's designers at Nintendo's retro studio have built a beautiful world full of fascinating scenery and cute little touches.
For example, here, under the canopy, there are small bugs that carry leaves over tree trunks:
And here's the cold door I opened with Sams new psychic ability. She can see a special orb using the new psychic sight, and open doors using the new sloric sword.
