John Mulaney shares on Mike Birbiglia's "Working It Out" podcast how caring for Olivia Munn's Vietnamese family brings him joy.
John Mullaney revealed in a podcast interview on Monday that he is taking care of his wife Olivia Moon's extended Vietnamese family financially, saying it gives him "a lot of joy to help".
Sitting down with host Mike Birbiglia for the 200th episode of the "Working It Out" podcast, the comedians discussed Mulaney's current international tour, "Mister Whatever," and teased material in which the Emmy-winning stand-up comedian discusses his relationship with his extended family since marrying Moon in 2024.
"So Olivia has a big — she's Vietnamese, and she has a big Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, that I'm one of the biggest financial contributors to," Mulaney revealed.“For the first 39 years of my life I supported the Vietnamese people — maybe none — and now I have 10 on the books.
Stating that nine members of Mann's family are in the business, Mullaney said he likes being able to support his growing family financially, as his parents didn't trust his success. His mother and father are lawyers, his mother-in-law and relatives are Vietnamese refugees in the United States.
"With successful parents, there's really nothing you can do for them. And it's been fun for me to help out and help out and do fun things for Olivia's family," Mulane said.
Birbiglia emphasized how Mulaney's success affects his view of the Munn family, asking, "Do you think that if you have a good relationship with them, in the back of their minds, I wonder if he's going to send me a thousand dollars?"
Mulaney joked that it was no wonder what they were thinking. They will just come out and say it.
"No wonder. Behind the thought? You mean in front of the voice? In front of the voice—the words that come out of their mouths?"he joked."How refreshing to be in a damned white family, never to talk about money."
"Olivia's family says, 'How much money do you have?'" Birbiglia said."I love it. How much money do you have?"
"Yeah, I tell them they like it," Mulaney said."They couldn't love it more."
Mulaney is currently touring across the U.S. with "Mister What," with the next leg of the tour scheduled for January 29 in Seattle.Later this spring, he'll headline the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles as part of the city's Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.
Munn and Mulaney began dating in 2021 and married in July 2024.They have two children.
