Mike McDaniel walked out of an interview with the Bills head coach in a surprising turn of events

According to The Athletic, the Bills did not meet Mike McDaniel as expected to interview for the head coaching vacancy.

Mike McDaniel declined another interview.

The former Dolphins coach did not meet with the Bills on Friday as expected to interview for their vacant head coaching position, according to The Athletic.

McDaniel confirmed in an interview with the Browns that his only option for a head coaching job appears to be with the Raiders.

If he doesn't join the Raiders, McDaniel is slated to join the Chargers as their offensive coordinator, although that deal has not been finalized, according to The Athletic.

It's been a whirlwind week for McDaniel in his job search after being fired by the Dolphins after his fourth season with the team.

He's been interviewing for both coordinator and head coaching jobs, yet it appears he's decided to lead the Chargers' offense rather than hold down one of the five.

Then on Friday, news broke that McDaniel was interviewing with the Bills, whose spot didn't open until Monday after they moved on from Sean McDermott.

The parties were scheduled to meet in Florida before McDaniel scuttled those plans.

With McDaniel recusing himself from the pursuit of the Bunns and the Bills and not interviewing with the Steelers and Cardinals, the Raiders have made him their only chance to become a head coach in 2026.

He previously interviewed with the team.

McDaniel could make sense for an organization with the No. 1 pick expected to take Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, in addition to two talented young offensive stars in 2024 first-round pick Brock Bowers and 2025 first-round pick Ashton Jeanty.

Leading the Chargers offense with Justin Herbert to help build his stock for a potential head coaching opportunity in 2026 is, of course, a strong backup plan.
