Scientists suggest sleep apnea cure could be as simple as switching to a vegan diet

A recent study conducted by researchers at Flinders University in Australia has found that adopting a vegan diet may help in preventing sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder that affects three in four American adults and is characterized by breathing issues and poor sleep quality.

The study involved 14,000 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who reported their eating habits and were then assessed for symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. The results showed that individuals on a plant-based diet, including vegetarians, vegans, and occasional flexitarians, were nearly 20% less likely to experience sleep apnea compared to carnivores.

The researchers believe that a healthy plant-based diet may help in reducing inflammation and obesity, two key factors that contribute to the risk of developing sleep apnea. They emphasize the importance of further research to fully understand the relationship between diet and sleep disorders, as well as explore possible links between ultra-processed foods and sleep apnea risk.

Experts suggest that individuals can improve their overall health and potentially prevent or manage sleep apnea by incorporating more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains into their diets while reducing consumption of unhealthy foods and sugary drinks. The findings underscore the importance of personalized dietary interventions and the need to make healthy eating accessible and easy for everyone.

This study highlights the potential benefits of a vegan diet in preventing sleep apnea and emphasizes the importance of making informed dietary choices to improve overall health and well-being.
