Restaurant Owner Reflects on Reimagining Career 4 Years After Covid Shutdown

The Covid-19 pandemic has hit Asheville’s restaurant scene hard in 2020, forcing closures and changes to business operations. One such casualty was Aux Bar downtown, owned by Steven Goff. Goff, like many other restaurant owners, was worried about the future of small businesses in Asheville.

In an effort to adapt to the challenges brought on by the pandemic, Goff started freezing, curing, and pickling food for eventual reopening. However, despite his best efforts, Aux Bar ultimately closed its doors for good.

But Goff didn’t let this setback keep him down for long. He found a new spot on Haywood Road and opened Tastee Diner, embracing the community and enjoying the eclectic food scene in Asheville. Reflecting on the challenges and changes brought by Covid-19, Goff found peace and fulfillment in his new venture.

Goff expressed gratitude for being able to continue his passion for food in West Asheville, highlighting the resilience of the Asheville community. Despite the challenges of the past year, he sees Asheville back in full swing, retaining its unique charm and character.

Asheville may have faced hardships due to the pandemic, but stories like Steven Goff’s serve as a reminder of the community’s strength and resilience. The restaurant scene may have taken a hit, but with dedicated individuals like Goff leading the way, Asheville is sure to come back stronger than ever.
