The vehicle was halted after locals suspected it was puffed with beef and after probe the meat it was having, around 100 people put the van on fire.
“They stopped the van and checked it and it appeared to them that the meat was beef and they set it on fire,” said a police official.
Later on, the police said that preliminary probes told that meat being shifted was indeed approximately 100 kg of beef. It informed that consumption of beef is illegal in Maharashtra.
“A case has been registered against unknown people who were involved in burning the vehicle, as well as against the driver who despite the ban was transporting the meat,” police officers said.
Meanwhile, the incident takes place after a previous such incident where mob in India beat to death an old Muslim man and severely injured his son following rumours that he and his family had been using beef in their meals.
