USA vs Latvia preview

Team USA displays several gold-seeking NHL players at the International Hockey Federation’s Men’s World Championships in Finland.

The United States, which opens Friday with Latvia, aims to end an 89-year drought for the gold medal at the world championships. Team USA won it in 1933, but has only won a silver or bronze medal since then. The United States won 8-2 at the tournament last year and took the bronze.

United States forward Austin Watson, who plays for the Ottawa Senators, is hoping to help end this drought.

“There is no greater honor than representing your country at any tournament. It has been a while for me,” Watson said via Bob Reinert of the Red Line introductory. “There is a lot of pride in that. There is a lot of excitement in that.”

Among the NHL players on the US roster as well as Watson are Alex Galchenyuk of the Arizona Coyotes, Seth Jones of the Chicago Blackhawks, Kieffer Bellows of the New York Islanders and Nate Schmidt of the Winnipeg Jets. Jones, Watson and Schmidt serve as captain for Team USA.

“We are very fortunate, our US head coach David Quinn via Reinert on our experienced NHL captains, ‘three men who are very well respected throughout…the NHL, guys who really embraced the leadership role prior to being appointed as captain.’” We really feel that our management team is in good hands.”

Latvia is also an NHL talent. This includes Columbus Blue Jackets goalkeeper Elvis Merslikins and San Jose Sharks forward Rudolphs with the Cherries.

“You want to start on the right foot,” Bellows said via Reinert. “You want to strengthen yourself in playing the right way no matter which player you play, so it’s a good game for us to play there and show how we’re going to play the whole tournament.”

Team USA will play in Group B in the preliminary round. The list of opponents includes Latvia, Austria, Finland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
