On the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, which the United Kingdom celebrates, for four days, the longest monarch on the throne in its history, the card of the Catholic President. Vincent Nichols published a congratulatory letter “thanking God for all the years of wonderful service rendered by His Majesty, beginning from the moment of his coronation,” in which Elizabeth dedicated herself to God and the nation. “The calm always displayed by the Queen,” wrote the Archbishop of Westminster, “comes from a peaceful spirit, rooted in trust in God and inspired by her Sovereign often spoken of and faithfully shown Christian faith.” The Conference of Bishops of England and Wales has also asked every diocese to consecrate one of the faithful’s prayers to the Queen this weekend, and has posted a special prayer for the King on its website for use prior to the conclusion of Mass. Today Elizabeth, who may have been tired after yesterday’s festivities, will not participate in the Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral.
