The four kidnapped US citizens have been found in Mexico: two of them are dead
Mexican authorities said they have found four US citizens who were kidnapped in Mexico on Friday and that two of them have died. The two survivors – one of them injured – were taken to safety. The four were kidnapped shortly after they crossed the border with Mexico, while in the state of Tamaulipas, near the city of Matamoros, an area that the US State Department considers a “level four hazard,” the highest. A group of people shot at and then took over the white pickup truck with North Carolina plates they were riding in. A Mexican bystander was killed during the attack.
According to various American newspapers, the group of four was supposed to consist of a woman and three men, and the reason for the trip was to hire one of the four to have plastic surgery. For Americans who live near the border, it is not uncommon for Americans to go to Mexico to buy medicine or undergo surgeries for less money than they would in their own country. The motive for the attack on the minivan has not been determined, but one of the main suspects is that the group was mistakenly targeted during a Mexican organized crime operation.
