The Acura brand returns to F1 at the US Grand Prix
The Acura brand is about to return to Formula 1. After nearly 15 years, the Acura livery will appear on the rear wings of the Red Bull Racing Honda and Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda Formula 1 cars for the Aramco US Grand Prix at the racetrack. The Americas in Austin, Texas, during the weekend of October 22-24. In addition, the Acura brand will also appear on the driving suits and helmet covers of Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez; Plus Scuderia AlphaTauri drivers Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda during the race weekend.
This isn’t the first time the Acura brand has appeared among F1 legends. In fact, Honda’s high-performance North American brand was a regular presence in the 1980s and 1990s. Notably, from 1989 to 1992 Honda Formula One drivers including Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost wore Acura masks at the Grand Prix races in Canada and the United States. Recently, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello featured the Acura logo on their visors for the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix.
The Acura brand in motorsports
Acura has had a prominent presence in North American motorsports since 1986. Among the various victories accompanying the rich Acura brand’s sports car racing legacy are: the IMSA Camel Lights Constructors and Drivers Championship in 1991, 1992 and 1993; 2009 LeMans Championships in the LMP1 and LMP2 categories. The brand won the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Drivers, Builders and Teams in the DPi and GTD racing categories in 2020, with the ARX-05, driven by Meyer Shank and Wayne Taylor Racing. Additionally, the NSX GT3 Evo is available via Honda performance development, , for North American customers only, won multiple championships in 2019 and 2020 in both the IMSA and SRO World Challenge.
