Pakistan cricket team coach Waqar Younis said that wicket-keeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed should lead the T20 squad after Afridi’s retirement.
“In my opinion, Sarfraz is a key-player for Pakistan who should become the next T20 captain after Shahid Afridi,” the coach of national side told media reporter during an interview in Sydney.
About Sarfraz’s dropping from T20 squad against Sri Lanka, Waqar Younis clarified that the wicket-keeper was not included just to give a try other winning combinations in the prospect of next year’s ICC World Twenty20.
“It is essential to keep on trying different combinations in T20. However, any player who is not played, such as Sarfraz in this instance, is always given a reason for their exclusion from the team,” added the coach.
He also said that the team management always takes Sarfraz in confidence in such matters.
The wicket-keeper-batsman was excluded from both the T20 matches against Sri Lanka and his dropping war intensely criticized by cricketing fans even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also said that it needed an explanation from the management over the move.
Some people maintain that the sole reason behind Sarfraz exclusion was the coach, Waqar Younis, who already faced severe criticism when he justified the exclusion of Sarfraz from the squad during World Cup in Australia-New Zealand this year.
On the other hand, the coach told that while the team is on tour, verdicts are not made merely by him alone rather, mutual consent of the touring selection committee comprising of coach, captain and the manager is the basis of all decisions.
