In New York, a floral masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh was sold for $61.8m. This painting was painted by him in the closing stages of life, according to the sources.
This painting, still life,vase with daises, and poppies exceeded its estimate of up to $50m at the Sotheby’s auction.
A 1951 by Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti obtained more than $100m, but just fell short of the record $104.3m for the artist.
Van Gogh’s painting was created at the French home of his doctor just months before his death in 1890.
Sotheby’s said the painting was bought by a private bidder from Asia.
Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853- 29 July 1890) was a Post-Impressionist painter of Dutch origin whose work- notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color.
He spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers, travelling between The Hague, London, and Paris, after which he taught for a time in England at Isle worth and Rams gate.
