Scott Miller, the US ambassador to the EU, stressed that the US is amazed at what Switzerland has done so far in seeking Russian money to block it after the invasion of Ukraine. According to him, Bern has made “tremendous progress”.

In an interview published today by the French newspaper Le Temps, Miller specified: “This is a package of sanctions of weight and breadth, to be honest, that we have not seen before in the world.”

Switzerland has withheld 6.3 billion Swiss francs of Russian funds as of May 12, according to Ambassador Erwin Bollinger. In early May, Bill Powder, an expert on the US Congress’ Helsinki Committee, accused Switzerland of lacking enthusiasm in hunting down Russian assets.

But Miller reassures, “The Helsinki Committee is independent without constitutional powers and is not a formal government entity,” he said. He added that the people who spoke in this context did not represent the position of the US executive branch or the administration of President Joe Biden.
