The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) asserts that approximately 40% of cancers can be prevented by following recommended guidelines related to specific risk factors. Recent research demonstrates that 37.7% of all cancers in the UK can be attributed to known risk factors, with men having a slightly higher percentage than women.

Among the largest contributors to cancer risk are alcohol, smoking, diet, and UV radiation exposure. Alcohol functions as a carcinogen and increases the risk of developing seven different forms of cancer.
