ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will inaugurate the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus service in Islamabad today. He will be accompanied by all Provincial Chief Ministers.
The Metro Rawalpindi Islamabad (MRI) is the joint development project of the Government of the Punjab and Capital Development Authority (CDA) to improve the traffic situations of twin cities. The project is funded on 50:50 sharing basis by the Federal Government and Government of the Punjab. However, the operation and maintenance control will remain in the hand of Punjab Metro Bus Authority (PMA).
The route of MRI is 22.5 km in length having 68 buses to play at initial level. Ten passenger stations are in the Rawalpindi and fourteen are in Islamabad along the corridor. Facilities at the stations includes: ticketing booths, concourse level passenger transfer, escalators, platform screen doors turnstiles for automatic fare collection and all other amenities for passenger convenience. Buses have the capacity to carry 150,000 people daily. The route of the MRI is Islamabad Secretariat to Saddar Rawalpindi and vice versa.
The total cost of the project was forty four billion rupees which was distributed by FG and Govt. of Punjab on 50:50 basis.
