ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved the appointment of Justice Jawwad S Khawaja as Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) after the retirement of incumbent CJP Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk on August 16, 2015, reported by Radio Pakistan.
The incumbent CJP Mulk is due to retire on August 16. After his retirement, Justice Khawaja who is the next most senior judge after the CJP Mulk in the Supreme Court would take the charge of office of CJP on August 17.
Justice S. Khawaja was born on September 10, 1950 at Wazirabad, Distt. Gujranwala. He got graduation degree in arts from FC College, Lahore in 1973 and LLB from the University of Punjab (Law College), Lahore in 1973. He then obtained LLM degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975. He was enrolled as Advocate of High Court in 1975 and as Advocate of Supreme Court in 1985.
He also remained professor of law at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and headed the Department of Law and Policy at LUMS until his appointment as judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 5, 2009.
