ISLAMABAD: The Upper House on Thursday passed the Islamabad Territory (ICT) Local Government Bill 2015.
This will pave the ways for holding elections in the federal capital. The bill will be tabled in the Lower House for approval, as said the reports. After National Assembly’s passing the Bill, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will hold local body elections in Islamabad.
Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar moved the bill to rationalize and acknowledge local government system in the federal capital which was considered right away.
‘The government accepts recommendations in spite of having number of concerns over the committee report, therefore, the Senate may pass the bill to keep in mind the deadline that the court set,’ Nisar said.
On the other hand, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan recommend the Senate chairman to postpone the bill till privilege committee’s report is presented in the House.
The Senate’s privilege committee is interested in a motion moved by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Saeed Ghani concerning a probable violation of the house’s privilege by the ECP.
The PPP leadership alleged the country’s electoral body violated the Senate’s privilege after it issued LG elections schedule for Islamabad.
