Ex-spokesperson , Pakistan Army, has divulged former army chief Gen(R) Ashfaq Pervez Kayani’s disapproval over launching a full-fledged military operation in North Waziristan, despite the military leadership’s willingness in carrying it out, three years ago.
Maj Gen (retd) Athar Abbas , former DG inter-Services Public Relations(ISPR) disclosed this fact during an interview with BBC Urdu, that owing to General (retd)Kiyani’s irresolution, the decision of the senior military command in launching the military operation in North Waziristan in 2010, couldn’t have been materialized.
Abbas also believed this as Kiyani’s inability in taking a decisive step. He also bemoaned that because of Kiyani’s indecisiveness, apart from incurring huge wastages of precious time, the country ,public, government, and armed forces had to bear the brunt .
“The deliberate postponement had only consolidated the militants ,and they had availed the ample time to have enlarged their numerical strength, resourceful capabilities and communication networks. All this has only added to our difficulties,” said the former DG ISPR.
He also added to his divulgence, that the decision of launching a military operation in N-Waziristan was taken up by the high military leadership, after getting the information from the stationed military commanders and Intelligence agencies.
” The stationed military commanders, in North Waziristan, were fully convinced that without launching a full-fledged military operation, restoration of peace wouldn’t be probable. This was attributed to the accumulation of all kinds of terrorist elements, here.”
He also informed of the split-opinion amongst the high military command ; one group was in favor of military operation while the other one resisted it .
He also hinted at the two chief reasons for the deliberate postponement of the operation : cracking against Haqqani network and the issue of Internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Athar Abbas also held US indirectly responsible, as well ,in the unnecessary delaying of the operation. He reasoned that because of incessant pressure of US on Pakistan ,to launch a military operation in North Waziristan, Pakistani authorities came under the duress ,because if they would carry it out, it would have been seen as safeguarding US interests.
