General Raheel Sharif was born on June 16, 1956 in Quetta to a Punjabi Rajput family, which has its roots in the town of Kunjah, Gujrat in the province of Punjab. His father, Muhammad Sharif was a Major in Pakistan Army and was retired as a major from his service. His elder brother Shabir Sharif was also an army personal and was a close friend and course-mate of former chief of army staff General (R) Perveez Musharaf. Major Shabir Sharif was killed during the 1971 war with India and was awarded the Nishan-i-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award. It was the second Nishan-i-Haider for Sharif’s family after a Nishan-i-Haider earlier received by his uncle Major Aziz Bhatti during 1965 Indo-Pak War.
General Raheel Sharif is the youngest sibling among three brothers and two sisters. His brother, Mumtaz Sharif has also served in Pak Army, but retired early because of medical reasons.
General Sharif is the father of two sons and one daughter. He completed his graduation from Government College Lahore and afterward joined the Pakistan Military Academy where he commissioned into the 6th Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment Battalion 6 in 1976.
On November 27, 2013, he was appointed as the 15th Chief of Army Staff of the Pakistan Army by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
