General Raheel Sharif was born on June 16, 1956 in Quetta to a Punjabi Rajput family, which has its roots in the town of Kunjah, Gujrat in the province of Punjab.  His father, Muhammad Sharif was a Major in Pakistan Army and was retired as a major from his service. His elder brother Shabir Sharif was also an army personal and was a close friend and course-mate of former chief of army staff General (R) Perveez Musharaf. Major Shabir Sharif was killed during the 1971 war with India and was awarded the Nishan-i-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award. It was the second Nishan-i-Haider for Sharif’s family after a Nishan-i-Haider earlier received by his uncle Major Aziz Bhatti during 1965 Indo-Pak War.
