Apex Court refuses Mumtaz Qadri’s review petition against death sentence


ISLAMABAD: Apex Court refused Mumtaz Qadrils review appeal against death sentence.


A three-judge bench of the supreme court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa took Qadri’s review petition in which court granted him death penalty on October 6.

Earlier, Khawaj sharif, former CJ Punjab and lawyer of Mumtaz Qadri submitted his appeal to the supreme court today claiming the  Islamabad High court’s decision is unlawful and constitutional.

During the 45 minute hearing, legal counsel of Mumtaz Qadri, former Lahore High Court (LHC) judge Mian Nazir Akhtar presented the case, Apex  court rejected the petition and stated that it was not proved that Salman Taseer had committed blasphemy.


News piece futher reports, As per Pakistan Penal Code Section 302 (C), the punishment should not be as severe as the murder was an act of provocation, the pleas stated.
Islamabad High Court (IHC) upheld Mumtaz Qadri’s death sentence on Monday under Section-302 of the Pakistan Penal Code for killing former Punjab governor Salman Taseerm but struck out  a terrorism conviction, making it unlikely he will be hanged soon.
