Captain Kernal Sher Khan (1970-1999) was a Pakistani army officer who embraced martyrdom during Kargil Conflict, is one of the among ten recipients who were are awarded Pakistan’s highest gallantry award, ‘Nishan-e-Haider’. Nishan-e-Haider literally means “Mark of the Lion”. This award is only presented to the members of Pakistan Armed forces, and you can know about its exclusivity as so far in 67 years of Pakistan it is just awarded to 10 recipients.
All of the 10 who received Nishan-e-Haider, sacrificed their lives in the battle field to up held the sovereignty and prosperity of Pakistan. Karnal Sher Khan showing his bravery today at Kargil got martyr and for this spirit he was awarded Nishan-e-Haider.
He was born in Naway Kiley (Shew Adda), a village in Swabi District. He was named ‘Karnal’ by birth after the rank of Colonel; which is locally called as Karnal, although his rank in Pakistan Army was Captain. He was a Captain in the 27 Sindh Regiment of the Pakistan and was later posted to 12 NLI Regiment during Kargil War.

“Captain Karnal Sher Khan emerged as the symbol of mettle and courage during the Kargil conflict on the Line of Control (LOC). He set personal examples of bravery and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. He defended the five strategic posts, which established with his Jawan’s at the height of some 17,000 feet at Gultary, and repulsed many Indian attacks. After many abortive attempts, the enemy on July 5 ringed the post of Capt. Sher Khan with the help of two battalion and unleashed heavy Mortar firing and managed to capture some part of the post. Despite facing all odds, he led a counter-attack and tried to re-capture the lost parts. But during the course he was hit by the machine-gun fire and embraced Shahadat at the same post. He is the first officer from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan to be awarded with Nishan-e-Haider.”
