Gulalai Ismali,28, Peshawar based human rights activist, has been awarded the Commonwealth Youth Award for Excellence Development Work.
Gulalai won the award from the Asia region out of a shortlist of sixteen nominees.
The award recognises inspiring young people under 30 whose development projects and programmes have had significant impact on their communities, countries and around the world.
Gulalai is Founder and Chairperson of ‘Aware Girls’, an organisation whose mission statement is to empower young women, advocate for equal rights of young women and to strengthen their capacity enabling them to act as agents of women empowerment and Social Change.
Gulalai, in 2013 led a team of 100 female , who monitors elections in Pakistan. She addressed domestic abuse and early marriages issues, also established above 200 discussion clubs to provide girls with the education and skills to protect themselves from contracting HIV-Aids.
