Two women polio workers killed in Mansehra

PESHAWAR: A gunman on Tuesday shot down two women who were members of a polio vaccination team during a polio drive in Mansehra.

According to officials, unknown gunman fired at workers Kaneez Nargis and Farah Gul as they were busy in giving polio drops to children in Mansehra’s locality of Dana. Police constable Ishaq was also killed besides women.

Pakistan is one of the three countries where polio remains rife.

Meanwhile, efforts to root out polio from the country have been critically nailed down by militant attacks on immunisation teams that have claimed 76 lives since December 2012.

The militants claim that the polio vaccination drive is a front for spying or a plot to sterilise Muslims.

Last year, the number of polio cases recorded in Pakistan rose to 306, which is highest in 14 years.
