Turning down marriage proposal: Woman burnt to death in Multan


MULTAN: A Pakistani young girl blown off on Tuesday after long suffering from being put on ablaze over rejecting marriage proposal.


20-year-old Sonia Bibi was admitted to the Nishtar Hospital, Multan a month ago after her former lover Latif Ahmed had ignited her when she refused to marry him.

The Nishtar Hospital’s medical staff had stated that she would respire soon but a doctor of the staff told that woman’s injuries had got severe and that announced her death on Tuesday morning.

The attack had burnt about 45 to 50 percent of her body, said the head of the hospital’s burns department.


Earlier, the incident took place in a remote suburb area of Multan district and police had arrested the 24-year-old suspect afterwards.

The victim told the police that she had fallen out of love with Ahmed, but preliminary probe suggested he ablaze her ensuing her refusal to marry him.

Meanwhile, a great number of women are put to death in Pakistan every year in cases of domestic violence or on the grounds of defending family ‘honour’.

The Aurat Foundation, a campaign dedicated to work for improving the lives of women in Pakistan’s conservative and patriarchal society, says approximately 3,000 women have been blown off in such attacks since 2008.
