Karachi University Professor, Dr Wahidur Rahman, shot dead


KARACHI: Dr. Syed Wahidur Rahman, assistant professor of Mass Communication in University of Karachi shot dead by four unidentified assailants in Federal B area of Karachi.


According to police statement, Dr. Wahidur Rahman was a resident of Federal B Area Lateef Square and was killed by the unknown gunmen when he left his home for University. Superintendent of Police (SP) Liaquatabad Tahir Noorani said to the media that two bullets were hit on the Dr. Rehman, one on his head and another to his shoulder that caused his death on the spot.

Dr. Rahman belongs to the Shia community and that could be the reason behind his killing, said DIG West police Feroze Shah.

Former chairperson of the Mass Communication department of the University of Karachi, Dr. Rafia Taj said that Dr. Rahman was an active member of the department and his death is a “great loss for the department.” He was also serving as the media advisor of the university’s Vice Chancellor, and wrote opinion articles and columns for leading newspapers.

Dr. Syed Wahidur Rahman was also known by the name of Yasir Rizvi. According to famous journalist Zia Ur Rehman, Dr. Syed Wahidur Rahman alias Yasir Rizvi was associated with Daily Ummat and served as member election commission of Karachi Press Club.

Students of the Karachi University protested against the brutal murder of Waheedur Rehman and blocked the University Road near the Silver Jubilee Gate. University activities have been officially suspended by the management for two days.


MQM chief Altaf Hussain has condemned on the murder of Dr. Waheedur Rahman and demanded from the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan that the murderers of the assistant professor be arrested as he claimed that terrorists were being allowed to play with the lives of Karachi residents.
