Anti-Polio Campaign: 471 detained over refusing vaccine in Peshawar


PESHAWARE: More than 471 people have been taken into custody on Monday for denying vaccinating their infants against polio.


According to local police, 471 parents in the areas of Mathra, Budh Bheer, Sheikh Muhammadi, Sarband, Sherkera, Armer and Khazana who turned down to get their children vaccinated against polio were detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

The arrestees are to be shifted to Central Jail whereas under Section 3 of MPO, further arrest warrants of 1000 people who declined to get their infants vaccinated will also be issued.

Meanwhile, Second segment of a two-day anti-polio drive ‘Sehat Ka Ittehad’ was triggered on Monday intending to vaccinate 2,771,456 children of nine viruses including polio. Approximately, 7,221 mobile teams, 761 fixed teams, 227 transit and 620 area teams had been set to carry out the task.


Furthermore, the district administration entailed a two-day prohibition on motorcycle riding under Section 144.

‘Sehat Ka Ittehad’ is a complete and useful polio vaccination movement initiated to wipe out the disease from KPK and FATA.

The campaign has begun at the same time in KPK and FATA to give polio-vaccination to every single child under 5 years of age with peculiar focus on IDPs’ children.

On the other side, owing to insufficient security, the anti-polio drive has been postponed in Quetta.

Moreover, as stated by District Health Officer (DHO) Quetta Dr Shah Jahan Panesai, all the preparations of the said campaign have been finalized whereas it would be launched after the provision of security to the polio teams.
