Sebastian Vettel will change his Mercedes power unit during the US Grand Prix. This was confirmed by himself during the press conference held today. So it is still unclear if it will take a whole bunch of new parts and fall straight to the bottom of the grid. Or he will simply change his car’s internal combustion engine (ICE) and serve a 10-place grid penalty.
The weakness that Mercedes sees in its powertrain package is in the ICE itself, and has led to penalties being imposed on factory drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas over the past month. Vettel crashed his power unit during free practice in Zandvoort in September.
“I think we’re going into a tough weekend because we changed the engine and we’re going to get a penalty. We will see what we can do. However, here it can be bypassed. So this is a good path to make this substitution. Hopefully we can recover on SundayIn recent races, many Mercedes-powered cars have had to replace one or more components of the power unit. Among them are Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton and Nicholas Latifi. In the US, McLaren could also risk a start from the back, with Lando Norris.
