Australian rugby chief Hamish McLennan’s comments foreshadowed the real possibility that Super Pacific Rugby would be abandoned by Australian franchises in 2024. The issue, the Sydney Morning reports, is primarily economic: imbalance with respect to franchise, New Zealanders could do damage The Federation in light of the 2027 World Cup, which will be organized in Australia.
But Dave Rainey, the coach of the Australian national team, bucked the trend. For him, the Australian franchises should remain in Super Rugby: “I think it’s great that both countries (Australia and New Zealand, editor) are playing. The competition this year has been excellent and both sides have been more competitive”
“I think it’s good for us and for us – insists Renee -. I hope this thing continues. Super Rugby has some of the best players in the world – that’s how you get better, you play against these athletes. It’s important.”

However, the coach told the AAP that he understood President McClennan’s reasons: “I understand that Hamish is an innovative thinker. From a business point of view, Australian rugby wants a bigger piece of the pie, and I understand your reasoning. But I also think playing these tournaments across Tasman is good for us, We just have to make sure it’s financially beneficial as well.”
After Pacific Super Rugby, which the Crusaders won in the New Zealand final against the Blues, Australia will play a series of test matches against England. An important triple test to understand where the Wallabies are one year after the World Cup in France, against a team going through a difficult period and with a technician – Eddie Jones – at the center of the controversy.
