3 Boxing, 17.5 million US previews! | Cinema
The first data on receipts are available Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 In US previews: The Marvel Studios cinecomic has collected $17.5 million, matching receipts for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania a few months earlier. This film finished its first weekend with $106 million, but the impression is that the third film in the James Gunn saga will do much better. Word of mouth, which held the film on Quantumania until it closed with one of the worst results for the MCU ($212 million in the US), is actually quite positive and tomorrow could hold surprises when the data on Friday hits the CinemaScore score. Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak has already reported a 94% positive reaction, even if it must be remembered that a movie like Guardians is front-loaded and thus the crowd of fans flocks to theaters in the first few days.
The good news, too, is that the two-and-a-half-hour runtime shouldn’t put viewers or audiences in too much trouble: It’s one of the longest films in the franchise, but certainly not the longest.
In short, current projections have been raised to $135/140 million for the North American weekend.
Excellent news, too, internationally: In two days, the film collected $35 million in 47 territories (including the UK, France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Spain, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico). Also in this case, word of mouth appears to be very positive, already noticeable in regions where departures seemed accidental such as Japan and South Korea. On Friday in South Korea, there was a very strong increase on Thursday, with $3.9 million and a total of $6.8 million in three days. The debut in China was also encouraging, with stellar ratings on platforms like Maoyan and Douban and $7.4 million including previews: the best number for a cinemacomic since the start of the pandemic. Almost $30 million is expected in China for the weekend, and global expectations have been revised: no longer $250 million in five days, but more likely $290 million if not 300.
We will keep you informed!
